Panasonic PT-56LCZ70 Review – 56-inch Rear Projection HDTV
Originally Reviewed on November 7th, 2007The Panasonic PT-56LCZ70 has some interesting new features and a few negative points. It has a standard black casing with rather thick borders on the top and sides in comparison to some other types of TV’s. As far as design though, the remote that it comes with is good. The layout is comfortable and easy to use, very similar to the previous year’s model.
The PT-56LCZ70 has some nice features. It has the highest resolution available of any HDTV. The large screen size of the HDTV makes the benefits of having a high resolution apparent. Another nice commitment from Panasonic is that they guarantee the bulb life in the LIFI technology for five years.

This Panasonic PT-56LCZ70 is a good quality rear projection HDTV even though the price is pretty high as well. Even though it has some nice features, color probably was not as good as it could have been. The black was not as dark as it needed to be. Also, there have been reports that you can see faint bands going across the screen horizontally on a primarily solid color background. For example, in an extremely dark scene where the screen is primarily black, you can see faint lines; this can be annoying at times. Overall though, a review of the Panasonic PT56LCZ70 shows it is a possible HDTV choice if you have the money for a TV that is priced between $1,400.00 and $1,999.99.

SHORT LAMP LIFE! BEWARE! These HDTVs were introduced in 2007, and Panasonic claimed their LIFI bulb would last 15000 to 20000 hours. They warrantied the FIRST replacement bulb for 5 years. Unfortunately, the claims of long life turned out to be fraudulent. The LIFI bulbs, which cost about $200, only last about 1500 hours (about a year for most users). Worse, the bulb was not designed to be replaceable and thus the entire set has to be torn down to get at it. Panasonic was apparently hoping they’d fix the short bulb life problem, but they never did and they pulled the technology from the market.
So you buy the set and it runs for a year and then (if you live within 50 miles of a service center) a technician will come out and put in a new bulb and you’ll get another year of use, and then you’re stuck. Each bulb after that costs $875 installed. Even if you’re capable of tearing down and rebuilding a TV yourself, it’s still $200 for the bare bulb, which has to be ordered from Panasonic.
Really, it’s not worth it.
