Up for Review: Samsung PN64F5500 Review Plasma HDTV.

The Samsung PN64F5500 is a 64 inch HDTV and is the biggest among the mid-range models lined up for the 20113-14 season. To put the fact straight, the plasma technology is quite on its way out through it has offered some outstanding picture quality. Buyers will no more be paying huge for plasma TVs but products like the Samsung PN64F5500 fit the mid-level budget perfectly. Priced at around $800, this product is loaded with top features including Smart TV platform, Bluetooth touch pad remote, voice command recognition, 3D and lot more.

Samsung PN64F5500 Features and Specifications:

  • Display Screen Type: Plasma
  • 1080p resolution
  • 600 Hz Subfield Motion
  • Anynet+™ (HDMI-CEC)
  • DTS Studio Audio
  • 3D technology
  • Smart TV with Apps

This is a product that seems to be way different than other plasma alternatives. Usually, plasma TVs are thought to be light and suitable to be carried around. However, the PN64F5500 weighs 45 lbs along with the stand. The weight is equally complimented by the 2.2 inch depth and you certainly require some help moving it around. All that been said, the overall aesthetics of the TV looks good to the eye. The bezel black front face and the sleek patented plastic guard look authentic. Even the stand is designed to be flexible (spider like swivel) for better viewing.

Coming to the functionalities, the Samsung PN64F5500 is way more than a normal home theatre system. The media input options feature 3 HDMI ports, one ARC (audio return channel), Ethernet, 2 USB inputs, hybrid Component/Composite input, and RF Cox. It further has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth audio and digital optics which can be paired with Soundshare for the best quality output.
The onboard controls of the Samsung PN64F5500 are interesting and resemble a gaming joystick. The backlit remote can impressively control a huge range of commands right from searching content to pausing streaming video and navigating other settings. However, we found that the swiping leads to a relatively slower processing than tapping in some unique scenarios. We would also have liked to see a number pad that goes missing with this control unit.

The output of the PN64F5500 is not the best but everyone should settle for this at this budget. The black levels, shadow details and color response seem to be better in other competing models like the ST60 from Panasonic. This doesn’t mean that the picture quality is poor here. However, with components like voice interaction, touch pad remote and 3D display, this is quite smart a buy.

Samsung has really been able to broaden its interface and fine-tune Smart systems to bring in modern intuitive features in their best aspects. This can be well experienced with the PN64F5500. The product comes with interesting features like switching automatically between sources with the power on, on-screen guides, carousel like screen panel and several other interactive and good looking options.
