Sony XBR-55X900A Review – 55-inch LED UHDTV

Originally Reviewed on May 25th, 2014

Up for Review: Sony XBR-55X900A LED UHDTV.

The Sony XBR-55X900A was introduced in the spring of 2013 and continues to be a highly marketed product this year too. It certainly presents an alternative for buyers who don’t have/want to spend $20,000 on an 84 inch TV but rather look for an affordable alternative. While the actual viewing screen is just the half of the revered 84 inch model, it does present almost the same set of feature that qualifies it for home and office installations. Some really innovative features with the XBR-55X900A include a 4K X-Reality Pro Engine that identifies with delightful up-conversion for 1080p content. Similarly, the picture quality and color rendition is appreciable and so is the passive 3D spec. Sony has been the first manufacturer to come up with a 4K technology and this rightly pours into the XBR-55X900A. The content quality is the driving factor behind this model and with a price tag under $4,000; there are few reasons that one might be discontent with the Sony XBR-55X900A.

Sony XBR-55X900A Features and Specifications:

  • Display Screen Type: LED
  • Panel Resolution: 3840 x 2160 (4K)
  • 2K 3D / Simulated 3D
  • S-Force Front Surround 3D / Dolby® Digital Pulse
  • Local Dimming / LightSensor™ Technology
  • OptiContrast Panel
  • HDMI Ports Quantity: 4
  • Screen Mirroring / Google TV Sync

The Sony XBR-55X900A comes with a host of revolutionary features for video, sound, convenience, energy saving, network, power and environment sensing. What is most delightful with this model is the high definition picture quality. Apart from a little fussy side viewing angle, this TV is probably the best screen you would get in the market and in this budget. There is an innate realism in the picture quality and the color richness makes it look so natural. One would totally think of the W900A series with the video output. New technologies that benefit the Sony XBR-55X900A are an X-Reality Pro Engine and Triluminous Display. This pair of features has been keeping Sony at the top of the TV market for quite some time now. The display and processing is promising in all aspects.

Now coming to the weaknesses that the Sony XBR-55X900A seems to bring along, we would say that the manufacturer could have worked with the side viewing angle a bit. Going beyond 25 degrees to the left, right, below or above the screen level results in a loss in depth. You cannot expect the same output from all corners of your room. However, edge lit Led backlighting does seem to bring back a balance. The TV can irrefutably place in any surrounding and still give highly contrasting and bright output. There is incredible depth and clarity to the video.

While we cannot talk enough of the picture quality, the up-conversion technology and motion flow settings too make a mark with this model. The passive 3D is super impressive and so is the normal 2D screen. With a full range of networking and smart features, this is the best TV that a wallet of this size can buy. gives Sony XBR-55X900A 4/5 stars.
