Sony KDL-48W600B Review – 48-inch LED HDTV

Originally Reviewed on May 30th, 2014

Up for Review: Sony KDL-48W600B LED HDTV.

The KDL-48W600B is a part of Sony’s low end lineup for 2014 and available under a price tag of just $650. Considering the picture and audio quality, this is a great price for this product. The Sony KDL-48W600B is for consumers looking at basic TV options without sacrificing on the new technologies that Samsung has taken the market with. Users don’t however completely miss out on some Smart TV specifications. We still have access to Sony Entertainment Network features like Netflix and Hulu. Several new technologies have been integrated into the KDL-48W600B to provide a basic yet futuristic experience. This is a value oriented product there is little to complain about.

Sony KDL-48W600B Features and Specifications:

  • Display Screen Type: LED
  • Panel Resolution: 1920 x 1080
  • Edge Lit LED backlighting
  • 60 Hz Refresh Rate
  • Motionflow XR 240
  • X-Reality Pro
  • ClearAudio+
  • SWF-BR100
  • HDMI Ports Quantity: 4
  • Energy Star 6.0 compliant

The highlight of Sony KDL-48W600B is the high quality black and white levels. There is a nice detail to the images considering 16:9 formats. Viewed from the center and front, it can be an impressive experience. However, the KDL-48W600B doesn’t do well with side viewing angles. Beyond 20 degrees, there is a substantial loss in color details, depth and picture clarity. Simply put, you wouldn’t have the same experience from all corners of the room. The anti reflective doesn’t do any justice to the screen either. It could be irritating if you put the TV in a bright surrounding. Make sure that you have an ambient lighting and that your couch is placed right in front of the screen and also in the screen level. Side viewing angle should also be an important point to consider while wall mounting the TV. The screen filter too can cause a hazy appearance resulting in loss of detail. A good option will be to turn on the brightness level.

The color rendition of the Sony KDL-48W600B can neither be said to be exceptional nor over-saturated. The screen comfortably calibrates itself to the D6500K, resulting in naturally accurate images. The KDL-48W600B however is helped greatly by the edge lit LED backlighting. While Sony has always worked with good processors, the KDL-48W600B gets a powerful X-Reality Pro engine. It is the same that is being used in new high end releases from Sony. Other new technologies that surface themselves on this TV are Motionflow XR 240 and ClearAudio+. This ensures that the viewer is exposed to good quality video and audio experience. Sony KDL-48W600B also comes with a dedicated gaming mode which would be a hit for the younger generation.

Other than the basic TV viewing options, Sony also gives a glimpse of the smart Sony Entertainment Network features. Where they aren’t anything like the high end products, you would be able to do more than you could with TVs a decade ago. The KDL-48W600B also comes with high connectivity features with 4 HDMI ports. This can complete an all round home entertainment setup.

HDTVUniverse.com gives Sony KDL-48W600B 4/5 stars.
