Element ELDHW401 Review: 40” LCD HDTV
Up for Review: Element ELDHW401 LCD TV. You can depend on Element to provide you with an affordable set which can fulfill your expectations of a basic one without digging too deep into your pocket. The main advantage of the set is the screen size. At 40 inches, you will love to see images of decent sizes on the screen. Another aspect you will like in this TV is the viewing angle. It is 178 degrees in both directions which means that there will be no washing out of colors at the edges. You can see the TV at an extreme angle and still view pictures which are no different from the ones you see from the center. This can be useful if there are too many people in the room and you don’t get the primary seats.
But apart from the viewing angle and the display size, there are not too many features to look forward to in this set. Firstly, it has only 720p resolution which will affect the clarity and the sharpness of the pictures. You would have expected 1080p resolution with a 40-inch TV but the manufacturer has thought it more important to keep the price low even if it means compromising with the image quality. Secondly, this is just a normal LCD set and will thus fail to instill interest in the consumers that the new LED sets are doing. The contrast ratio of 1200:1 is also just about enough for giving you decent blacks and whites. It is nowhere comparable to the high contrast ratios that are being flaunted by the high end Samsung or Sony TVs.
Element ELDHW401 Features and Specifications Review:
- 40-inch LCD display
- 720p resolution
- 1200:1 contrast ratio
- 500 cd/m2 brightness
- 8 ms response time
- 178 degrees viewing angle
- 3 HDMI
- 2 x 3W speakers
- 1 PC input
- 3D comb filter
The brightness of 500 cd/m2 is good and you can expect good pictures under all kinds of lighting. The images will be quite alright both in the night under dim lights, and in the day under bright lights. The response time of the TV is also normal at 8 ms and so you are likely to see blurring in the images. Whenever you watch action flicks, you can notice the subtle blur when the main character is followed by all the goons on a car chase. Your kids will also hate it if they don’t get the right kind of pictures when they play games on their gaming console. But again, if money is a priority, you may be happy with the minimum features on this TV.
Connectivity options are alright with 3 HDMI, 1 PC input, 2 component video and 2 composite video inputs. Even though there are no USB ports, but you can connect gaming consoles, camcorders and Blu-ray players through the HDMI. If you want, then you can use the set as a computer monitor because of the PC input. The sound effects are not very spectacular. There are 2 speakers of 3W each. This may not be enough in a large room. You may have to buy another home theater system to elevate the sound level. However, there is a surround sound feature which will fill the room with sound and you can hear the voices clearly. This is truly a basic set which you can buy as a second option for your house.
